Obituary for Angela Hendricks Phillips

Angela Hendricks Phillips, age 70, passed away on November 26, 2018 at Carillon Assisted Living in Newton surrounded by her loving family.

Angela was born October 23, 1948, in Newton, the eldest child of C.T. Hendricks, Jr. and Jacquelyn Little Hendricks. She was proud of the fact that her ancestors settled in Catawba County in the 1800s and one of them donated the first court house.

Angela is preceded in death by her father, Carl T. Hendricks, Jr., grandparents, Carroll and Lorine Little and Carl T. Hendricks, Sr. and wife, Gertie. Angela loved them dearly and spent a great deal of time with them. Her beloved daughter and granddaughter, Laura Teague Huffman and Taylor Huffman also preceded her in death.

Angela commented often that she had a blessed and interesting life. She wanted to be remembered primarily as the mother to Jackie, Laura, and Kathryn-the loves of her life. Her grandchildren Taylor, Rachel, Jacob, and Ava brought much fun and happiness to her life, also. She was very proud of her great-grandchildren, Kari and Sophia.

Angela is survived by her children Jacquelyn Teague Logan (Brett) of Charlotte and their children Rachel and Jacob; Kathryn Phillips Worrell (Michael) of Murrells Inlet, S.C. and their daughter Ava. Also surviving are her sisters Nancy Holcomb (Stephen Pipkin) and Melissa Wike (Rodney); nephew Allen Hager (Karen) of Randleman, and their son Evan; nieces Sarah and Anna Wike of Newton, and goddaughter Rebecca Saunders (Lindsay Robins) of Newton.
Angela worked in medical offices prior to earning her Bachelor’s degree. She graduated cum laude from Lenoir Rhyne University in a mere 3 years while being a single parent. Angela sold real estate for a while, but always had a passion for helping others. Her areas of focus included domestic violence, abuse and neglect of children, poverty, and homelessness. She served as the Director of First Step Spouse Abuse at Family Guidance Center, providing the leadership that created the first shelter for battered women. When she experienced a growing concern for the children in the shelter, she accepted the job as Administrator of the Guardian ad Litem Program (GAL). In this capacity, Angela was instrumental in the development of court improvement, pre-trial conferences, GAL volunteer training, and adoptive-risk placements. She fought tirelessly for the best interests of the children for whom she advocated. Angela was recognized many times for her service in the 25th Judicial District which included a nomination for the Hancock-Settlemyer award and was a Presidential Who’s Who recipient. She served on the Board of the Children’s Resource Center and was President of the Louise L. Blake Foundation.

A lifelong and faithful member of Grace Reformed UCC, Angela served in about every capacity during her lifetime. She was President of Consistory, a Sunday school teacher of all ages, chair of Church and Ministry and Scholarship Committees and church secretary at one time. She chaired the Search Committee in 2004.

Angela’s favorite place was the beach and she especially loved the yearly extended family vacations at Sunset Beach which included shag dancing. She will be remembered for the many lives she touched, including friends, coworkers, and children. People of all walks of life looked to her for wisdom.

The family will receive friends in the Chapel at Grace Reformed UCC in Newton from 2:00 to 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, December 2, 2018 with a service to celebrate Angela’s life to follow at 4:00 p.m. After the service there will be a reception for family and friends in the Fellowship Hall with Angela’s favorite music being played. The Reverend Ryan Brakemeyer (Pastor of Grace UCC) will officiate, assisted by Reverend James R. Luck, Jr. (Co-Pastor of Second UCC, Lexington, NC).

The family would like to thank the hospice staff especially nurses Joanna and Andrea. Much appreciation is extended to Carillon for the loving care given to Angela. Memorials may be sent to Carolina Caring (Hospice), St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or Lenoir Rhyne University, specifically for a scholarship for a single parent.
